The king is so much a part of his land that the grapes and vines of his robe almost hide him entirely. If it weren’t for his head, cowled in red (passion), and golden adornments, we would hardly see him.
The coin here represents his ‘talent’, an ancient word for the coin paying a day’s wage. It is what you do that gets you paid.
In elemental terms, the suit of Coins, or Pentacles represent Earth and all manifest upon her bosom, but particularly that which grows, lives and dies. It looks as though our king is in this fertile phase.
Some people are good at making art, and some are good at making food, while others are good at making money. Anything that feeds, shelters and sustains your world sits on your knee today.
Notice his posture, if you will. His right side is completely relaxed – but on the left he holds the disk and focuses his energy on this whilst holding down the shadowy figure beneath his left boot. He makes it all look easy and this energy is yours today.
As a court card, this character represents a person in our lives. It is probably you, emphasizing your masculine and reigning qualities of one who masters his physical reality. You are like this king today, the ruler of all things that sustain your kingdom.
As an archetype in history one may think of Alexander the Great, who decided to rule the known world, and before he died, pretty much did. Alexander lived 29 years.
You are probably not Alexander the Great, but you have a destiny today. The challenge is mastery over physical realities. Money, talents (as in what you do to earn the daily wage), home, family, garden, farm – the things you command flourish under your benign oversight.
Remember, kings aren’t champions, they usually delegate the quest or battle, but the ones history loves best are the ones who strap on armor and are prepared to battle any enemy that emerges, as our king above so calmly does. He makes it look easy, and his kingdom is yours today.
Perhaps it is just a day to pay bills, write contracts and make appointments. As the king today, you are in charge. Remember to keep your foot on the shadow, like this king. Stay grounded and strong like a bull. Sheer determination has its place in you today.
On the Shadow: Don’t allow your bounty to overgrow and become useless. Maintenance is so much easier than repair. And storing the harvest for later is easier than trying to eat your way through abundance! Remember who’s in charge to day, you can do it!
Images from The Smith-Waite Tarot Centennial Edition Deck are used in this blog. They feature the artist, Pamela Colman Smith’s, original coloring and lovely back design. The cards are a bit oversized and printed on sturdy cardstock. This deck is one of my personal favorites. =:->AD
